4 Ways that Small Companies Trump Big Firms on Google

from Tom Funk’s Web 2.0 and Beyond
The Web levels the playing field for business — where size no longer matters. In fact, the flexibility of a smaller organization makes it easier to get found on Google through “link juice. ” Tom Funk lists four reasons why bigger companies have problems getting found on the Net.
Don’t make these Big Company website mistakes
1. Websites require keywords in prominent positions to be found by Google algorhithms. Big company sites tend to stick to spam-y sales talk.
2. Highly paid graphic designers tend to choose fancy images that aren’t read by Google spiders.
3. Sophisticated ecommerce platforms may complicate URLs and slow internet search potential.
4. Efforts are devoted to web development rather than engagement on the Net. Getting found through Google requires external links, i.e., mentions from outside your own site.
Smaller companies that may lack large web design budgets may actually win out on the race for more search results.

“Highly paid graphic designers tend to choose fancy images that aren’t read by Google spiders.” – I really liked this one! My Rutgers department has learned that printed material and website promotion are different, and as such their graphic designer has a very different set of skills than I do as their webmaster.
Bravo on this list. Basic SEO really isn’t that hard. I got a small school website to a Google ranking of 5 just by having well-written code, excellent content and incoming links (one can’t do that as easily today – more competition).
